Learn to Play the Steel Drums! at Haley
Program Description: Looking for a unique way to kick off the summer? Dive into the world of tropical rhythms with our Summer Steel Band Class! This is a rare opportunity for students to learn the "national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago" right here in our community.
Students will join a full steel pan ensemble, learning to play authentic instruments in a fun way, collaborative environment. Over the course of two weeks, we will master 2–3 songs ranging from traditional Soca and Calypso to modern Pop hits.
Whether your student is a seasoned musician or has never picked up a mallet, they are welcome! No musical background is required.
The course is led by Luke Abrahamson, a veteran CUSD band teacher with 19 years of experience. Mr. Abrahamson is not only a dedicated educator but also one of the very few professional steel pan builders and tuners in the United States. Learning from an expert who understands the instrument from the inside out—literally—is an opportunity you won't find anywhere else!
